Many people have asked me "When should I hire a consultant?"
I think a better question is "When should I NOT hire a consultant?"
Consultants are great when you are either entering into new, unchartered territory and want to gain the benefit of expert advice, or when you find that what you have been doing for the past while just isn't working for you. Consultants with the right experience can provide the objective, 3rd party point of view that can help you get "un-stuck" from your issue.
Which brings us exactly to the more important point. Do NOT hire a consultant if you have no intention of implementing their advice. If you are an organization that have used them in the past, and have immediately dismissed their advice, saying to yourself "What do they know? We know better!" then save yourselves the money.
Think of them like your family doctor. We all know people who will go to their GP for a check-up, and then disregard what they are told because they don't like what they've heard. Consultants are not paid to make you feel better, they are paid to help your organizaiton perform better.
And just like your doctor, if you don't take their advice, don't be surprised if you are not happy with the final consequences.
Let's talk,
Mordechai
